Hot Tuna – (Pragmatic Play) Slot Review

Hot Tuna: Slot Overview

Not to be confused with the surf-inspired lifestyle brand or the Jefferson Airplane offshoot of the same name, Hot Tuna here refers to a fishing-themed online slot developed by Reel Kingdom, a partner of Pragmatic Play. Yes, it’s yet another Reel Kingdom fishing release, which naturally raises the question: could this be the start of a new dynasty capable of challenging the studio’s already dominant Big Bass franchise? Only time will tell. For now, players are invited to grab their rods — and, somewhat unexpectedly, don traditional red-and-gold attire — as Hot Tuna takes a stylistic detour from familiar territory.

Rather than leaning fully into Western fishing tropes, Hot Tuna blends Asian-inspired cultural elements with its maritime theme to create something that feels intentionally different. Joining players is a cheerful fisherman dressed in red and gold, accompanied by a matching box aboard an equally lavish boat. Unlike Big Bass Bonanza 1000, which places players beneath the water’s surface, Hot Tuna unfolds above it. A rolling ocean stretches behind the reels, framed by distant jagged islands, giving the game an open, airy feel. As with Reel Kingdom’s other fishing titles, the tone remains light-hearted and playful — a clean, sanitised take on fishing, free from the smells, mess, and queasiness of the real thing.

The game itself runs on a 5×3 grid with 10 fixed paylines, evaluating wins from left to right starting on the first reel. There are three RTP configurations available, with the most volatile version offering a top return of 96.53%. Bets range from $/€0.05 to $/€240 per spin, and an optional ante bet can be activated to double the stake in exchange for an increased chance of triggering free spins.

Symbol-wise, Hot Tuna keeps things thematically cohesive. Low-paying symbols are fishing line–styled card ranks from 10 to A, while higher-value icons include fish (which also act as money symbols), seahorses, boxes, sushi, and octopus lures. Five matching card royals pay 10x the bet, while premium symbols deliver rewards between 20x and 200x the stake for a full line. Wild symbols substitute for all icons except scatters, money, and Hot Tuna symbols, and — in familiar Reel Kingdom fashion — they only appear during the free spins feature.

Bonus Round & Feature Buy

With no additional mechanics in play during the base game, attention quickly turns to the free spins feature. Landing 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols triggers 10, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively. If only two scatters appear in the base game, there’s still a chance a third may reveal itself, either via a respin mechanic or randomly.

The Hot Tuna symbol is exclusive to free spins. When it lands, it is collected and applies an x10 multiplier to the total value of all collected money symbols. If multiple Hot Tuna symbols are included in the same collection, their multipliers are added together, significantly boosting potential payouts.

During free spins, every wild symbol that lands awards one additional free spin and immediately collects the values of all visible money symbols. These money symbols can carry values ranging from 2x to 2,500x the bet. If a money symbol appears without a wild, it is stored in a collection meter instead.

The meter consists of 7 steps, each requiring 6 collected money symbols to complete. Filling a single step retriggers the feature with +10 free spins and introduces a Hot Tuna symbol that can randomly land on every free spin. Each subsequent completion of the meter grants another +10 free spins and adds yet another Hot Tuna symbol into the random drop pool. After the first retrigger, Hot Tuna symbols themselves can also be collected in the meter.

To keep momentum high, if a free spin ends with no wilds or money symbols on the grid, the game may randomly place wild, money, or Hot Tuna symbols onto the reels. However, Hot Tuna symbols can only appear this way once the feature has been retriggered at least once.

Feature Buy

Players can directly purchase the free spins round for 100x the bet. When activated, the feature is triggered by automatically landing 3, 4, or 5 scatters, immediately granting access to the bonus spins.

Hot Tuna: Slot Verdict

If there’s one thing Reel Kingdom understands, it’s how to build a fishing slot — and with Hot Tuna, the result lands firmly in familiar territory. Reading through the rules, the game feels instantly recognisable, which will likely comfort players who prefer safe, well-trodden mechanics. The similarities to Big Bass Bonanza quickly become apparent: the reliance on hitting a third scatter in the base game, the fact that little of consequence happens until free spins are triggered, and the familiar symbol-collection loop. For better or worse, it’s obvious where Hot Tuna draws its inspiration from.

That said, Hot Tuna isn’t a carbon copy. Reel Kingdom has introduced a new progressive-style sequence tied to collecting money symbols during free spins. Unfortunately, this system is also where the game starts to feel a bit frustrating. Gathering the required number of money symbols to unlock Hot Tuna symbols and retrigger the feature can be slow and demanding. Compared to a standard Big Bass setup, players need to collect far more money symbols relative to wilds, making retriggers noticeably rarer.

The trade-off is that when a retrigger does occur, the reward jumps straight to an x10 multiplier, rather than slowly climbing from x2 through x3 and beyond. On paper, that’s a bold move and potentially a big payout booster. In practice, it’s a gamble that may divide opinion. If several bonus rounds pass without a single retrigger, frustration can set in quickly, and it’s easy to imagine players walking away feeling short-changed.

Of course, the opposite can also happen. When retriggers and Hot Tuna symbols start landing freely, the experience becomes far more enjoyable. Even then, overall win potential isn’t one of the game’s strongest selling points, with payouts capped at 2,500x the bet. On the plus side, the odds of reaching that maximum are more favourable than in Big Bass Bonanza, which counts for something.

In the end, Hot Tuna is a charming and visually refreshing slot with a pleasant theme swap. However, despite tweaking the free spins mechanics, it largely feels like business as usual from Reel Kingdom — a competent, familiar fishing game that plays it relatively safe, even when it tries to take a risk.
