Ice Wolf 2 – (ELK Studios) Slot Review

Ice Wolf 2: Slot Overview

If icy landscapes and bone-chilling themes are your thing, ELK Studios may have just the slot for you. Ice Wolf 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the original Ice Wolf, first released back in 2019, and it returns colder, louder, and more ferocious than before. Arriving six years after its predecessor, the follow-up brings higher win potential and an expanded feature set, including a dedicated free spins bonus. Many of the core mechanics from the original make a comeback as well, such as smashing through layers of ice to unlock more of the play area and wolf-driven effects — only this time, there’s more of everything. So, brace yourself against the cold and see what rewards can be uncovered in this frost-bitten sequel.

Visually, Ice Wolf 2 fully embraces its frozen identity, with almost every part of the screen encased in ice. The backdrop depicts Viking longships trapped within a frozen cavern, leaving no doubt about the game’s glacial setting. When free spins are triggered, the location remains the same, but an Aurora Borealis lights up the background, adding an ethereal touch that pairs with haunting sound effects and heavy-metal riffs during big win celebrations. The game layout is split into three sections: a feature row at the top, an ice section beneath it, and the main 6×3 grid offering 729 ways to win. At the start of a base-game spin, the upper sections are frozen and inactive. As ice is shattered and cleared, up to three additional symbol rows can be unlocked, expanding the grid and pushing the number of ways to win as high as 100,842. Betting ranges from $/€0.20 to $/€100, volatility is high, and the RTP is set at 94%.

The symbol lineup consists of nine regular symbols. These include card ranks Q to A, along with shields, hammers, axes, birds, deer, and wolves. For six-of-a-kind wins, the lower-value symbols pay 0.25x the bet, the mid-tier symbols award between 0.75x and 1.5x, while the top-paying symbols deliver returns ranging from 2x to 5x the stake.

Ice Wolf 2 comes packed with a deep and varied feature set, including respins, wilds, Golden Wilds, feature row symbols, wolf-triggered mechanics, Wolf Spins, and X-iter feature buys.

Respins
Wins identified during pre-evaluation remove ice blockers from the relevant columns, based on how many winning symbols land. Each successful evaluation pays out and triggers a respin. Active Ice Wolf symbols can also trigger the Ice Wolf feature. A round ends when no further wins or Ice Wolf respins are available, when a bonus mode finishes, or when the maximum win cap is reached.

Wilds and Golden Wilds
Standard wilds can appear on reels 2–6 across all sections, while Golden Wilds land on reels 3–6 in every section except the feature row. Golden Wilds may carry multipliers of x2, x3, or x5. When affected by a wolf feature, both wild types receive a +1 multiplier increase — wilds without an existing multiplier are upgraded to x2. Wilds trapped beneath ice remain sticky until the ice is cleared or a new round begins. Wilds on the feature row stay in place between respins until they form part of a winning combination, while Golden Wilds are always sticky and only reset at the start of a new game round.

Multiplier Symbols
Multiplier symbols appear on the feature row and apply a global win multiplier ranging from x2 to x50 when active. The final win multiplier is calculated by adding together all active multiplier symbols and any wild multipliers involved in the winning combination. These multiplier symbols remain sticky between respins.

Wolf Symbols
Three different wolf symbols drive much of the gameplay:

  • Howling Wolf: Appears on reels 2–6 in the main section. Before wins are evaluated, it turns left or right and clears all ice within a 90-degree cone from its position. Any wilds inside the cone gain increased multipliers, after which the Howling Wolf transforms into a wild.

  • Ice Wolf: Lands on reels 2–6 in the main and ice sections, or in the Wolf Den during bonus play. If active at the end of a spin, it triggers an Ice Wolf respin and locks all Ice Wolf symbols in place. Before the respin resolves, wolves run up the affected columns, clearing ice and converting all positions from the Ice Wolf symbol upwards into wilds. Any wilds passed over receive a multiplier boost.

  • Golden Wolf: Appears on reels 2–5 of the feature row. When it lands, the Golden Wolf feature activates before evaluation, affecting its own column plus the two adjacent columns. Ice is cleared, and wilds fill positions from the Golden Wolf downwards, potentially carrying x2 to x5 multipliers. Wilds passed during this process gain increased multipliers.

Wolf Spins
When respins conclude and an active bonus symbol remains on the feature row, 5 Wolf Spins are awarded. This unlocks the Wolf Den section below the main reels. During each Wolf Spin, the Wolf Den feature may activate, placing up to four Ice Wolf symbols on reels 2–5 after the reels stop. Wolves then run up the columns, clearing ice and converting all symbols from the Ice Wolf position upwards in the main and ice sections into wilds. Wilds passed over gain multiplier boosts, though Ice Wolf symbols no longer trigger respins in this mode. +1 Spin symbols can also land on the feature row to extend the bonus. At the start of the bonus and between Wolf Spins, only Golden Wilds and wilds covered by ice remain locked in place.

X-iter Feature Buys
The X-iter system offers five different buy-in options: Bonus Hunt for 2.5x the bet, granting a spin with over triple the usual bonus-trigger chance; Call of the Wild for 10x, instantly activating a wolf feature; Ice Breaker for 25x, delivering a spin with all ice cleared; the standard bonus round for 100x; and a Super Bonus for 250x the stake, where all ice is cleared from the outset.

Ice Wolf 2: Slot Verdict

If sequels are supposed to deliver more features and bigger win potential, Ice Wolf 2 ticks both boxes with confidence. It doesn’t drift far from the core concept of the original, but instead builds on it, layering in additional mechanics and sharpening the gameplay for a more aggressive experience. The familiar loop of breaking ice to expand the active play area returns, and players who enjoyed this slow-burn, tension-building process the first time around will likely appreciate it again here — especially with new elements added to keep things fresh. Expanding rows and increasing ways to win are areas where ELK Studios has plenty of experience, as seen across its Gold series, and that expertise is clearly reflected in Ice Wolf 2, albeit in a more gradual, position-focused format.

There’s an engaging push-and-pull dynamic as ice is cleared away only to return later, but where the original Ice Wolf could occasionally feel like it was spinning its wheels, the sequel avoids that pitfall thanks to the introduction of a dedicated free spins bonus. And when it comes to potential, this is very much a modern slot. Ice Wolf 2 ups the ante with a maximum win of 10,000x the stake — four times higher than the original. Free spins play a role in that boost, but much of the added firepower comes from the expanded range of wolf features. While these mechanics are broadly similar in function — typically clearing ice, adding wilds, or increasing wild multipliers — they work well together and give the game extra weight.

Despite a slightly old-school feel in places, Ice Wolf 2 still stands out as a strong sequel. It successfully preserves what players enjoyed about the first game while unleashing a blizzard of new content on top. Highly volatile and sometimes demanding, it can feel like a grind, but when the wolves start prowling and the features align, the game can spring explosively to life. Fans of the original should feel right at home exploring this frozen, feature-packed landscape.
