Moon Princess Origins – (Play’n GO) Slot Review

Moon Princess Origins: Slot Overview

Like many things in life, anime and manga aren’t for everyone—but when it comes to online slots, this distinct style of Japanese pop culture has found a surprisingly solid footing. A major contributor to that success is Play’n GO’s Moon Princess series, which has won over players with its unique aesthetic and engaging gameplay. From the original Moon Princess to spin-offs like 100, Trinity, Power of Love, and even a festive Christmas Edition, the series continues to charm its dedicated fanbase.

Now, the saga expands once again with Moon Princess Origins. As the title suggests, you might expect a deep dive into the backstories of the trio of magical, long-legged, flowing-haired princesses—but if you’re hoping for lore, don’t hold your breath. Despite the “Origins” label, this release doesn’t delve into the past or offer much narrative expansion. It’s more of a branding choice than a storytelling one. That said, fans can always use their imaginations to fill in the blanks.

Visually and aurally, Moon Princess Origins sticks close to the series standard. You’ll find the same polished, anime-inspired presentation, complete with sparkling effects and familiar sound design. It’s pleasant and cohesive, but not particularly groundbreaking for those already familiar with the franchise.

Grid & Base Game Mechanics

The action in Moon Princess Origins plays out on a delicate, wire-framed 5×5 grid, where wins are formed cluster-style by landing 3 to 5 matching symbols either vertically or horizontally, starting from any position. This gives the game a flexible and engaging feel, even if the core mechanics are familiar to fans of the series.

Like its predecessors, Moon Princess Origins is a high volatility slot, designed for players who enjoy swings between dry spells and potentially explosive payouts. It’s offered in multiple RTP configurations, with the highest version clocking in at a respectable 96.29%. Bets range from €/$0.10 up to €/$100, offering a wide betting range for all player types.

Symbols & Payouts

The symbol lineup is split between low and high pays:

  • Low pays: Heart, Star, and Circle

  • High pays: The three princesses—Love, Star, and Storm

Here’s what you can expect for 5-of-a-kind wins:

  • 2.5x the bet for low symbols

  • 10x the bet for any single princess

  • 5x the bet for mixed princess combinations

  • 20x the bet for five wilds

When winning combinations form, they are removed from the grid, and remaining symbols drop down to fill the empty spaces. New symbols do not cascade in from above, which adds a strategic edge to how combos play out.

Additionally, when a winning combo of Heart, Star, or Circle symbols is cleared, a wild symbol is created in the center of the winning cluster. Wilds substitute for any pay symbol and are removed from the grid if they are the only type left in play.

Bonus Features in Moon Princess Origins

In addition to its cascading mechanics and wild generation, Moon Princess Origins is loaded with signature features that fans of the series will recognize—including Girl Powers, Empowerment, Trinity, Free Spins, and Instant Prize Orbs.

Girl Powers

Girl Powers activate when wins are made using Princess symbols (Love, Star, or Storm). The chance of triggering a Girl Power depends on the strength of the win:

  • 3 of a kind: 50% chance

  • 4 of a kind: 75% chance

  • 5 of a kind: 100% chance

Once triggered, the ability of the matching Princess is used. The trigger chance increases to 100% on the second win with the same Princess symbol, and remains at 100% until a Girl Power activates, Trinity or Free Spins are triggered, an instant prize is awarded, or the round ends.

Each Princess has a unique ability:

  • Love – Converts 1 set of symbols into another symbol

  • Star – Adds 1 or 2 wilds to the grid

  • StormRemoves 2 sets of symbols from the grid

Empowerment Mechanic

Wins with low symbols (Heart, Star, Circle) help fill the Empowerment Meter. Landing a 6-symbol win or more with one of these symbols empowers the corresponding Princess:

  • Heart = Love

  • Star = Star

  • Circle = Storm

Empowered Girl Powers have enhanced effects:

  • Empowered Love – Converts 2 or 3 sets of symbols

  • Empowered Star – Adds 2 to 4 wilds

  • Empowered Storm – Removes 2 or 3 sets of symbols

Trinity Feature

The Charge Meter fills as you land wins with any Princess symbol (wilds count too).

  • A 3-symbol win fills 3 segments

  • A 4-symbol win fills 4 segments

  • A 5-symbol win fills 5 segments

Once the 6-segment meter is full, the Trinity feature is triggered:

  • Awards 1 respin when no further wins occur

  • During Trinity, each Princess activates her Girl Power in the order: Love → Storm → Star

  • Girl Powers are used only when a drop does not produce a win

  • Further wins during Trinity can retrigger Girl Powers

Clearing the entire grid (excluding wilds) during Trinity triggers 10 Free Spins.

Free Spins & Instant Prize Orbs

During the Free Spins round, completely clearing the grid awards Instant Prize Orbs—the highlight of the feature.

Each Princess can award a unique orb, with varying payout ranges:

  • Love’s Orb – Awards 5x to 150x the bet

  • Star’s Orb – Awards 75x to 1,000x the bet

  • Storm’s Orb – Awards 1,000x to 10,000x the bet

Additional Free Spins can be earned by refilling the Charge Meter, up to a maximum of 20 free spins.

Moon Princess Origins: Slot Verdict

While it seems Play’n GO’s art and theme team took a familiar, safe route with Moon Princess Origins, the game mechanics department put in a bit more effort. Visually and thematically, the game treads well-worn ground—there’s little in the way of new lore or storytelling despite the “Origins” title, and stylistically, it doesn’t stray far from earlier entries in the series.

That said, where Moon Princess Origins shines is in its core gameplay. The familiar challenge of clearing the grid remains as rewarding as ever, combining cascades, wild placements, and Girl Powers to create tense, satisfying chain reactions. It’s the same formula that made earlier Moon Princess titles such a hit—sometimes frustrating, often thrilling, and always rewarding when everything lines up.

This version builds on that by introducing instant prize orbs, which can award up to 10,000x the bet—a massive jump compared to earlier games. Even without the traditional win multiplier mechanic, the orbs elevate the win potential dramatically. In fact, with a max win of 20,000x, Moon Princess Origins holds the highest ceiling in the series to date.

Still, despite those mechanical upgrades, the overall experience feels like a mixed bag. The visuals and presentation, while polished, lack impact. The “Origins” theme could have been an opportunity to deepen the game’s world but instead feels like a missed opportunity. And while the gameplay has its strong moments, it doesn’t quite recapture the magic or novelty of the original Moon Princess, which felt far more fresh when it first launched.

Also worth noting: as with most Play’n GO titles, that 20,000x win cap should be taken with a grain of salt—it’s more theoretical than something most players will realistically hit.

In the end, Moon Princess Origins isn’t a bad game by any means—it offers familiar fun with a few new twists—but it’s also not the standout entry fans might have hoped for. Solid, but not spectacular.
